English Translation

लवथवती विक्राळा ब्रह्मांडी माळा,
वीषे कंठ काळा त्रिनेत्री ज्वाळा
लावण्य सुंदर मस्तकी बाळा,
तेथुनिया जळ निर्मळ वाहे झुळझुळा॥१॥

जय देव जय देव जय श्रीशंकरा,
आरती ओवाळू तुज कर्पुरगौरा जय देव जय देव ॥धृ॥

कर्पुरगौरा भोळा नयनी विशाळा,
अर्धांगी पार्वती सुमनांच्या माळा
विभुतीचे उधळण शितकंठ नीळा,
ऐसा शंकर शोभे उमा वेल्हाळा ॥२॥

जय देव जय देव जय श्रीशंकरा,
आरती ओवाळू तुज कर्पुरगौरा जय देव जय देव ॥धृ॥

देवी दैत्यी सागरमंथन पै केले,
त्यामाजी अवचित हळहळ जे उठले
ते त्वा असुरपणे प्राशन केले,
नीलकंठ नाम प्रसिद्ध झाले ॥३॥

जय देव जय देव जय श्रीशंकरा,
आरती ओवाळू तुज कर्पुरगौरा जय देव जय देव ॥धृ॥

व्याघ्रांबर फणिवरधर सुंदर मदनारी,
पंचानन मनमोहन मुनिजनसुखकारी
शतकोटीचे बीज वाचे उच्चारी,
रघुकुलटिळक रामदासा अंतरी॥४॥

जय देव जय देव जय श्रीशंकरा,
आरती ओवाळू तुज कर्पुरगौरा जय देव जय देव ॥धृ॥

The fierce Lord (Rudra) who dances with a fierce appearance, He whose neck is darkened because of the Hālāhala poison, who sports a fiery third eye (on His temple), His matted locks where one can glimpse the beautiful face of celestial Devī Gaṅgā, so that her sheer force would not destroy the earth. ||1||

Praise the Lord Śrī-Śaṅkara! We offer an aratī to You, whose skin art fair as camphor. ||धृ०||

The fair one is (very) simple and honest with big eyes, Whose consort Parvati occupies one half of His body (Ardhanārīśvara), Who is adorned with a garland of (fragrant) flowers, He who adorns Vibhūti (ashes) which is besmeared all over his body, and sports a blue neck. Like that, Śaṅkara is the beloved of Umā.||2||

When the Gods and the demon churned the ocean, all of a sudden emerged the deadly Hālāhala poison capable of incenerating the whole universe. Happily without hesitation, Lord Śankara drank this deadly poison (out of the great compassion for all the creatures since none was capable of withstanding the deadly venom), and thus became wellknown as Nīlakaṇṭha, the dark throated one (since the poison was stopped by the divine mother Umā at the throat). ||3||

The adorer of tigerskin as garment, the great serpent (Vāsuki) as ornament, and the destroyer of Madana (Manmatha – or the god of love), The five faced one who who is all attractive and the beswower of peace upon the sages. Even with innumerable bījas , When (I), the servant of the the scion of the lineage of Raghu, Rama – Ramadāsa utter (in the mind), this is but enough to describe/glorify the great Lord Śaṅkara.||4||
